Bibimbap

I took this recipe out of a book about “100 easy to cook” Korean recipes. It’s not that it’s hard to cook, but… Bibimbap is comprised of way too many small individual parts to make it feasible for weeknight dinners. I think this is why I had never cooked it before. And then there was […]

Melbourne and the Ring of Steel

Thankfully restrictions are reducing and from 5km we are now allowed to go up to 25km. There still is a separation between Melbourne and Regional Victoria, but hopefully that will be dropped before the end of the year – the infamous Ring of Steel. I understand why the restrictions were put in place and agree […]

Chickens (11 of 52)

This week was a “normal”. But the girls were “naughty” and ate a seedling Dean had planted, and now they can’t stay out on their own. So they go out when I can chaperone them. The Chickens Valentina is really going beyond my expectations. She’s become my favorite (sorry Consuelo and Dolores). I know Valentina […]

Kimbap

The proposal was to make the Korean rice rolls to have as a snack. They will not last very long. There was a mismatch between what the recipe said that was the amount of rice required (2 1/2 cups of cooked rice) and the amount the package said 1 cup of raw rice would make […]

Homemade Pasta

So tonight, my husband and I made homemade pasta. He mixed the dough even though it would be customary, since I have Italian ancestry, for me to do it. We made the fresh egg pasta that is used to make cappelletti (family tradition for Christmas) and tortellini. I opened up the dough and cut it. […]

Eggplant in Buttermilk sauce

Taken from the book Plenty (see reference at the end of the page). It turned out delicious: such a delicate yet vivid flavor. I would recommend to anyone who likes eggplants and has no problems with dairy. Recipe from: Ottolenghi, Yotam. Plenty. San Francisco, CA: Chronicle Books LLC., 2010

Chickens (10 of 52)

This week was a “normal”, yet unusual week. Our dog house guest went back home and the girls now rule the backyard. The Chickens It is clear that Valentina is the Alfa of this brood of chickens. Having said that, they still all love me (or better, my ability to give them worms) and will […]

Eggplant and Bulgur

And so, another day, another dinner. Yesterday’s dinner, Sweet and Sour Fish bits (tiles) with Chinese broccoli in ginger sauce, as delicious! I took a photo which I think didn’t come out as great as it could have. Today’s dinner is Chermoula Eggplant with Bulgur (from Ottolenghi’s book Jerusalem). It turned out great! I’m not […]

Warm Caramelized Fennel Salad

Ok, I’m starting to look at food photography. Why? Because I’ve been cooking a lot. So, tonight’s dinner was Warm Caramelized Fennel Salad with goat feta.

Chickens (9 of 52)

This week was supposed to be profile week. Unfortunately a lot happened and it wasn’t. We are dog-sitting a lovely dog, but he’s too excited, which means we couldn’t get the chickens and the dog in the same backyard at the same time. More below. The Chickens We started dog sitting this week. As a […]

Green Papaya Salad

In the last 5 weeks, I have started cooking for my husband and I on a daily basis. If it were just for me, my lunches would all be rice and beans, a grilled chicken breast and some veggies (standard Brazilian meal) and dinner would be whatever. I’m Brazilian, but my husband isn’t, so that […]

Chickens (8 of 52)

Almost didn’t post this week, as it has been a very complicated one. In the end, things got pulled together and I was able to get a few shots today. The Chickens The chickens in the kitchen have become a nuisance. They didn’t stay in the pen anymore, pooping everywhere and Dean didn’t finish building […]
