The astronomical Winter Solstice (for me, the start of Winter) is arriving (tomorrow at 12:57 AM). I always love the astronomical events, like solstices and equinoxes, as it marks a period of “transition”. With each transition, the opportunity for new types of photography.
In Spring we get a lot of flowers, insects, the days start to slowly get warmer and the days are longer than the nights. In Summer we hot (not for the last couple of years, though) dry weather, great for all sorts of outdoor photography (except night sky… that is, unless you are looking for something specific that is only visible in the summer time). Autumn we get leaves turning red and brown (at least from the non-native plants), the nights start getting longer than the days and this provides great opportunity for golden hour and night sky photography. Winter is a time for indoor photography, unless you live in an area that snows, forward planning and potential night sky photography (watch out for those cloudy or rainy nights).
I thought we couldn’t go without mentioning the solstice. With the new design of the site and blog, my countdowns and my archives are not as accessible (or at all) as it used to be. The solstice will provide me three months of planning for the remaining year ahead.
