This week (past fortnight) we discovered a tragedy… Valentina is Valentino. We are trying to figure out what to do with him. We love him so much, but our local council does not allow rooster. As a consequence, we need to make tough decisions.
The Chickens
The confirmation that Valentino’s crowing was because he was a rooster and not a hen has made us sad. We are trying to come up with ways to muffle his crowing so it doesn’t bother the neighbors. It looks like it’s going to be difficult and we are running against the clock. He is such a handsome rooster and probably not an Easter Egger, as we were told.
There is a couple of positive things we can take from him being a rooster (if we get to keep him):
- I can continue picking him up for cuddles;
- At some point, we will get little chicks.
But, the fact that Consuelo and Dolores are significantly different and that Valentino doesn’t look like an Easter Egger rooster at all makes me think that the people who Dean got the chicks from just put a bunch of them together and said they were Easter Eggers due to the different colored eggs we would get.
With that in mind I think Dolores is a ISA Brown, Brown Hyline or similar brown egg laying chicken (egg laying = lays one egg per day as opposed to 4 per week). I have no idea what breed of chicken Consuelo could be, maybe a Cornish Chicken.
Considering that laying breeds start to lay earlier than other breeds, we should expect eggs in a week or so from Dolores. We may have to wait up until she completes 6 months to get any eggs from Consuelo (circa 31/01/2021).
